Johannesburg is not London. If you pick a booking app designed around the UK or US market, you may feel it within a week.

  1. WhatsApp: Most clients in Joburg read WhatsApp long before they open an email.
  2. Data: Prepaid data isn't cheap. Your booking page needs to work on a budget Android, not just fibre and an iPhone.
  3. Commission: Some "free" software makes its money by taking a cut of bookings that come through its marketplace.

Here is a practical look at what to check in Johannesburg right now, what the different pricing models can cost, and how to move your book over without dropping clients.

What a Joburg stylist needs from booking software

Whether you work from a suite in Sandton, a home studio in Soweto, or travel to clients across the East Rand, the checklist is mostly the same:

  • Reminders on WhatsApp, not email nobody reads and not messages you pay for one by one.
  • A booking page that is light on data. Your client might be on a small bundle. A heavy page costs them money and costs you the booking.
  • Deposits paid the way clients already pay. EFT or a payment link from the app you already use, not a processor the software forces on you.
  • No commission on clients you found yourself. Your Instagram, your referrals, your regulars.
  • Something that runs from your phone. No front desk, no PC, no router that dies when the power does.

Miali: phone-first booking for independents

Best for: independent stylists, mobile stylists, and small teams.

  • WhatsApp reminders: automatic reminders go where clients actually look, plus email reminders.
  • Phone-first: install it on your home screen or use the Android app, and clients book in their phone browser without an account. Recent calendar and client data stay on your phone, so you can still check your day on a weak connection.
  • No payment lock-in: clients pay deposits straight to you by EFT or payment link. Miali doesn't process payments and doesn't take a cut.
  • Free plan: start free, with paid plans if you grow into them.

Marketplace booking platforms

Best for: bigger spas and salons with a full team that want marketplace exposure.

What to check: some well-known platforms combine a monthly fee (sometimes per team member) with a commission on new clients who book through their marketplace. Pricing models change, and features can differ by country, so read the current South African pricing and terms carefully before you sign up.

International salon apps

Best for: high-end barbershops and salons that want a client-facing app.

What to check: many of these are built for the US and Europe first and billed in dollars or euros, so what you pay in rand moves with the exchange rate. Compare the monthly price in rand, not just the headline number.

What it actually costs: a worked example

Say you are a nail tech doing 50 appointments a month at an average of R450. Ten are new clients each month.

On a marketplace that takes, for example, 20% of a new client's booking:

  • 10 new clients × R450 × 20% = R900 a month, counting only their first booking.
  • If the commission also applies when those clients rebook through the marketplace, it grows month after month.

On Miali Pro:

  • $8 a month, which is roughly R143 depending on the exchange rate.
  • To be upfront: Miali also bills in US dollars. But at $8, a big swing in the rand moves your bill by a few rand, not a few hundred.
  • No commission on any booking.

No-shows are the other half of the maths. If 5 of those 50 appointments are no-shows, that is R2,250 a month of chair time you can't sell again. Run your own numbers with the no-show cost calculator.

How deposits work on Miali in South Africa

Miali doesn't process payments. You keep whatever setup you already trust:

  1. Turn on deposits in your settings and choose a fixed amount or a percentage of the service price.
  2. Add your payment instructions: your EFT banking details, a payment link from the app you already use, or a PayPal.me link.
  3. When a client books, they see the deposit amount and how to pay. They pay you directly.
  4. They enter their payment reference in the booking form. The booking stays pending until you check it came through and confirm the slot.

The money lands in your account, not ours. Miali adds no platform fee on top of whatever your bank or payment app already charges.

Reminders that don't depend on your phone

Miali sends a WhatsApp reminder 24 hours before each appointment by default. You can set it anywhere from 1 to 72 hours ahead, and a second reminder goes out 2 hours before.

Reminders are sent by Miali, not from your handset, so they still go out if your phone is flat or the power is off at your place. The free plan includes reminders for 10 appointments a month to try it out. Pro covers 100 appointments, and Business covers 350 across up to 5 bookable team members. Each appointment counts once, even though it gets two reminders. See pricing.

How to switch without losing clients

  1. Add your services with real durations. A full set with art takes longer than a fill. Make the calendar reflect that so you don't get double-booked.
  2. Set your hours, and if you do house calls, add a travel fee to those services, list the areas you cover, and pad the duration for driving time.
  3. Turn on deposits and reminders before you share your link.
  4. Share one link everywhere: Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business, your Status, and Google Business Profile.
  5. Answer DMs with the link for a couple of weeks. Many regulars switch on their own once they see how easy it is.

FAQ

Is there a free version? Yes. The free plan covers 10 online bookings and reminders for 10 appointments a month, with no card needed. Pro is $8 a month for unlimited bookings.

Can clients pay deposits by EFT or a payment link? Yes. Add your banking details or payment link as your payment instructions. Clients pay you directly and enter the reference when they book.

Do my clients need an app? No. Your booking page opens in any phone browser.

Does it work for barbers and salons with staff? Yes. The Business plan supports up to 5 bookable team members, each with their own hours, and clients can pick a person or choose "Anyone available".

The bottom line

Load shedding has eased, but the habits it taught haven't: South African business owners still want tools that are light, fast, and don't depend on a desk, a router, and a PC all working at once. Look for WhatsApp reminders, deposits paid straight to you, and a plan that doesn't take commission on clients you found yourself, then compare the real monthly cost in rand before you choose.
